In the previous article we discussed what Joomla is and what it can do. Now we’re ready to install it but hold on. There are a couple of different options to consider before we go installation crazy. The two choices boil down to what I call “manual” install and “automated” install. The manual install consists of downloading a Joomla compressed file, extracting it, uploading to your hosting account, setting proper permissions on directories, setting up your database, cross your fingers that you didn’t miss anything, running through the Joomla installer and finally creating your configuration file. The automated install consists of logging into your hosting account selecting Joomla as your application to install, type in a few key pieces of information and hit go. It’s pretty much that easy but here’s the rub, not all hosting companies offer the “automated” install. So doing a little homework may save you some headaches. So which one is right for you? Well they both work but it comes down to where do you want to spend your time. The automated installer will have you up and running in no time with little to no issues. A quick look at the Joomla installation forum will give you an idea of what problems other folks are facing with the manual process. You’ll notice that there is a constant stream of questions/being asked. If you’re just trying to learn the guts of Joomla with no real time constraints then the “manual” install could be right for you. If however you are like me and more interested in investing your time in using and building Joomla sites then go the “automated” installer route.
